Erika Teraoka was born in Tokyo, Japan, and began cello lessons at the age of five, studying with Irene Sharp in California and New York. After receiving her B.A. from Yale University in 2003, she pursued further studies under Miklós Perényi at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, where she graduated with a M.M. in 2013. In addition, she has worked regularly with, among others, András Schiff, Dénes Várjon, Yo-Yo Ma, and Felix Galimir.
Ms. Teraoka gave her first recital at the age of eight, and the following year, played with the Pioneer Valley Symphony in Massachusetts. She has subsequently been soloist with the Colorado Springs Symphony, Walla Walla Symphony in Washington, and St. Thomas Orchestra in New York. Other recital and solo engagements have taken her to cities around the US, as well as to Japan, England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Netherlands. With a repertoire ranging from the baroque to contemporary, she performed the complete Bach Suites for Solo Cello at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York, the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven in Nyack, NY and has premiered numerous works for solo cello and chamber ensembles. A winner of the Artists International Auditions, she made her New York Recital Debut at Weill Recital Hall in 2000.
She plays a cello made in 1999 by James N. McKean and bows by Joseph Krosnowski.
